I don’t like the virtual desktop functionality of MacOS because there is no way to display any kind of identifier when you jump into a new desktop. I workarounded this limitation by using a set of backgrounds with hardcoded IDs.
Using numbered wallpapers, when you jump to a different desktop, MacOS first renders the background and then the windows on top, giving your brain just a split second to read the identifier of the virtual desktop where you are.
Here is my SVG template. You can use this template to make your backgrounds in your preferred resolution.
